Depending on the rules of the game being played, there may be several betting intervals in a single deal. The first player to act has the option to open a bet by placing chips (representing money) into the pot before any of the other players see their cards. This is called making an ante.

Once all players have two of their cards, another round of betting takes place. The two mandatory bets that are put into the pot by the players to the left of the dealer are called blinds.

After the first round of betting, each player must decide whether to discard their cards and draw new ones from an undealt portion of the deck or hold the cards they have. Once the players have their new cards, a final round of betting takes place, and the player with the highest hand wins the pot.
